Sahabat kita bertemu lagi,

Validity of the COPD assessment test translated into local languages for asian patients

a  GlaxoSmithKline, 150 Beach Rd, #22-00 Gateway West, Singapore 189720, Singapore
b  Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia

Abstract
Objective: Our objective was to evaluate the validity of the COPD Assessment Test (CAT), translated locally, for measuring the health status of patients in Asian countries. Methods: A pooled analysis of cross-sectional studies from Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam, and Hong Kong was performed. Smokers or ex-smokers, aged ≥ 40 years, with a smoking history of ≥ 10 pack-years and a COPD diagnosis in the past 6 months or more were recruited. Demographic, smoking, and COPD history and spirometry data were collected from patients who completed the CAT or St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and had their dyspnea assessed. Results: The study included 333 patients with mean age of 69 ± 9 years and smoking history of 38 ± 25 pack-years; 82% had ceased smoking. One-third suffered from cardiovascular comorbidities, 72% reported at least one exacerbation in the past year, and 82% recorded at least moderate health impairment (CAT scores ≥ 10 units). The CAT score was positively correlated with the SGRQ score (r = 0.72, P < .001) and Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnea score (r = 0.50, P < .001) and poorly correlated with the FEV 1 (r = 2 0.23, P < .001) and number of exacerbations in the past year (r = 0.11, P = .04). The relationships between the CAT score and SGRQ score, MRC dyspnea score, or FEV 1 did not differ between countries (P value for interaction term 5 0.76, 0.75, and 0.06, respectively). Conclusions: The CAT correlated well with the SGRQ and MRC dyspnea score in all countries, and the relationship did not differ between countries despite varying patient characteristics. This suggests that a CAT score in one of these countries has the same clinical significance as the same score in another. © 2013 American College of Chest Physicians.

Abstract
Aims: This research sought to determine optimal corn waste stream-based fermentation medium C and N sources and incubation time to maximize pigment production by an indigenous Indonesian Penicillium spp., as well as to assess pigment pH stability. Methods and Results: A Penicillium spp. was isolated from Indonesian soil, identified as Penicillium resticulosum, and used to test the effects of carbon and nitrogen type and concentrations, medium pH, incubation period and furfural on biomass and pigment yield (PY) in a waste corncob hydrolysate basal medium. Maximum red PY (497·03±55·13mgl-1) was obtained with a 21:1 C:N ratio, pH 5·5-6·0; yeast extract-, NH4NO3-, NaNO3-, MgSO4·7H2O-, xylose- or carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)-supplemented medium and 12days (25°C, 60-70% relative humidity, dark) incubation. C source, C, N and furfural concentration, medium pH and incubation period all influenced biomass and PY. Pigment was pH 2-9stable. Conclusions: Penicillium resticulosum demonstrated microbial pH-stable-pigment production potential using a xylose or CMC and N source, supplemented waste stream cellulose culture medium. Significance and Impact of the Study: Corn derived, waste stream cellulose can be used as a culture medium for fungal pigment production. Such application provides a process for agricultural waste stream resource reuse for production of compounds in increasing demand. © 2012 The Society for Applied Microbiology.

Classifying cyst and tumor lesion using Support Vector Machine based on dental panoramic images texture features

a  Electrical Engineering Department, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, 90245, Indonesia
b  Dentistry Department, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia

Abstract
Dental radiographs are essential in diagnosing the pathology of the jaw. However, similar radiographic appearance of jaw lesions causes difficulties in differentiating cyst from tumor. Therefore, we conducted a development of computer-aided classification system for cyst and tumor lesions in dental panoramic images. The proposed system consists of feature extraction based on texture using the first-order statistics texture (FO), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Gray Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM). In this work, there were thirty three features which were classified using Support Vector Machine (SVM) based classification. The result shows that differentiation of cyst from tumor lesions can achieve accuracy up to 87.18% and Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUC) curve up to 0.9444. When using the number of features used as predictors, the highest accuracy obtained were 8462% using FO, 61.54% using GLCM, 76.92% using GLRLM, 84.62% using the combination of FO and GLCM, 87.18% using the combination of FO and GLRLM, 75.56% using the combination of GLCM and GLRLM, and 87.18% using the combination of FO, GLCM and GLRLM. The highest AUC value was 0.9361 using FO, using GLCM was 0.8667, using GLRLM was 0.8722, using the combination of FO and GLCM was 0.9278, using the combination of FO and GLRLM was 0.9444, using the combination of GLCM and GLRLM was 0.8417, and using the combination of FO, GLCM and GLRLM was 0.9278. Based on the AUC value, the level of accuracy of this prediction can be categorized as 'Excellent'.

Effect of copper on survival, osmoregulation, and gill structures of freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii, de Man) at different development stages

Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Department of Biology, AirlanggaUniversity, Surabaya, Indonesia

Abstract
This study evaluated the acute toxicity of copper at different life stages of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, to determine the effect of sublethal copper concentration on osmoregulatory capacity (OC), to measure the copper level in gills, and to investigate the effect of copper on the histological change of the gills of adult prawns. The 24-, 48-, and 96-h medium lethal concentration (LC50) of copper on M. rosenbergii increased progressively along with the increasing life stage, from postlarvae, juvenile to adult. The 24-, 48-, and 96-h LC50 values for copper were higher at 0 ppt than those at 12 ppt for both juvenile and adult. After 7 d exposure to 0.75 mg Cu L-1 at 0 and 12 ppt, the OC values of exposed prawns were reduced by 12 and 47%, respectively, compared with control animals. However, the OC value of prawns exposed to 0.5 mg Cu L-1 was not significantly different from the OC value of control prawns both at 0 and at 12 ppt. The copper concentrations on gill tissues increased significantly in prawns exposed to copper both at 0 and at 12 ppt. After the copper exposure, swelling of lamellae, multiple hyperplasia and necrosis were observed in gill lamellae, resulting in abnormal gill tips. An obvious relation between the impairment of osmoregulation and the structural damage of gills are reported in this study. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Abstract
Phytochemical investigation of the dichloromethane extract of the leaves of Peltophorum pterocarpum, a tropical ornamental tree, led to the isolation of twelve compounds (1-12). One new derivative of peltogynoid ophioglonin (1) and a new 2-phenoxychromone (2) with its 3′-O-β-D-glucoside derivative (3) are described here for the first time. In addition, nine flavonoid derivatives, including peltogynoid ophioglonin (4), were isolated for the first time from this plant. The structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Evaluation of the estrogenic activities of 1, 2, and 4 using different model cell systems revealed that 4 was estrogenic and that 2 was largely inactive. Interestingly, 1 was unable to stimulate the proliferation of breast and endometrial cancer cells but exhibited substantial estrogen receptor α-mediated activation of gene expression. This observation indicates that 1 can be further evaluated for its cancer chemopreventive potential. © Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart - New York.
